Introduction

Hello! My name is Rachael and I am a Senior Film and English major. I am living on campus this term and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I definitely did not attend Lawrence thinking that I would ever be a film major but here I am. It wasn't until I worked with a friend who majored in film at Lawrence that the option even crossed my mind. So it still kind of feels new to me even though I am graduating this spring. I guess that I have been interested in film for a while, but I just didn’t realize it until three years ago. 


I am currently really interested in children's media and have been curious about heading in that direction career wise but also I have no idea what I am doing. I love children’s books and children's television (Over The Garden Wall is so good) so my majors sort of meet up in that sense. 


Some things I like are dogs, snorkeling (in lakes -- I’ve never actually snorkeled in an ocean), snacking, watching tv, collecting too many rocks, and poetry.

    Hey Rachael! I'm Fannie and it's nice to virtually meet you! My sophomore year I took a class on children's lit and it kinda got me addicted to YA Novels. I think my favorite has been "They Both Die at the End" so I recommend it if you haven't read it yet. Looking forward to seeing you in class :)

Movement & Perseverance

  Something that really stuck with me after I watched Tangerine was Sin-Dee’s almost constant movement through the spaces around her. She seemed to always have direction, but at the same time, the specifics of her direction were unclear to both her and the audience.  When she was tracking down Dinah, she didn’t know where to find her at first, what she looked like, or even what her name was besides D something. The way she moves sort of reminds me of perseverance in her continued search of Dinah as well as her consistent handling of obstacles. There’s just something about how she almost moved head-on through the city that seemed like she was propelling herself towards and through whatever she had to encounter. Like the movement was reflective of her perseverance. Her movement was something more than a walk, or even a walk to a destination. It was like her movement had this enduring sort of energy.

Rusty Cars & Personal Space

  I remember in elementary through early high school spending a lot of time in and around old cars. Sitting on their rusted hoods picking at the paint flecks, finding parts for forts, and feeling like I was hiding from the noise of the baseball game in the distance. That sense of being away returned when watching  Mosquita y Mari. They study and grow their connection in the old car lot. A scene that really stuck out to me was when they first studied together in the car and read all of the names and notes people had written on its surfaces in the past. In a way, that space seemed removed from not only other physical presences, but also the pressures that they bring. The inside of a car is a defined space. It's clear that this is where I am and anyone else is outside of my space, which I think can give one a sense of control or autonomy when you don't have as much as you would like.
